Tommy’s Cafe

1308 Ross Road, North Vancouver

Google describes Tommy’s Cafe as a “homey hangout”, and we have to agree. Vintage furniture and old record sleeves line the walls of this one-of-a-kind classic diner. Friendly, smiling service and a delicious but no-frills menu is the kind of atmosphere that you can relax in, whether it’s Sunday brunch or a burger during lunch break. It even has great vegan and vegetarian options like the VeeGan bowl. In any case, whatever you order off the menu will be delicious, and you’ll want to come back every weekend to try a new dish. We recommend the french toast for sweet tooths or the Mexicali Benny’s for a hearty breakfast.

Mr. Sushi Lynn Valley

1250 Lynn Valley Rd, North Vancouver

A North Vancouver sushi staple, Mr. Sushi has locations in both Lower Lonsdale and Lynn Valley. It’s probably because Mr. Sushi is one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in town. Don’t worry though, the service here is blazing fast, so you’ll be sat down in front of your favourite selection of rolls in no time. At first, Mr. Sushi’s exterior and interior decor may seem understated, but trust us, you’ll be too busy scarfing down a salmon roll and udon to notice. If we had to describe the food here in one word, it’d probably be: exquisite. (Elio Tip: Come here right after a visit to Lynn Canyon and treat yourself to a well earned meal, and don’t hold the tempura.)

Big Bite Donair

1252 Lynn Valley Rd, North Vancouver

Literally right next to Mr. Sushi Lynn Valley, you’ll find Big Bite Donair, a middle eastern kebab shop infused with flavour and spice. Authentic in taste, this place uses a clay oven (tandoor) in its cooking, and even offers 25 different levels of spice! Compared to most kebab shops, the food here is a little pricier, but it’s so worth it. However, the real draw is the people who work here. Charismatic and passionate, you can tell that each dish is prepared with care and attention. Feel free to ask questions or get recommendations. You won’t be disappointed. It’s the kind of “hole-in-the-wall” joint you dream of finding.

Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub

1177 Lynn Valley Rd, North Vancouver

No neighbourhood is complete without a local pub to hangout, have some drinks, and watch a game. At Black Bear, you can get all of this and more thanks to the cozy and inviting atmosphere. Wood paneling, wall paper, and a stone fireplace all give Black Bear the air of a homey pub where locals meet after work. The food here is great too! Think elevated pub grub and you’ll understand why the South West Tortellini or Black Bear’s signature quesadilla always hit the right spot. There’s also a huge beer selection, and with rotating drink specials, there’s always good value here. Stop by on a Monday play some bar trivia.

Yama Sushi

1232 Ross Rd, North Vancouver

Yes, this is the second sushi restaurant listed here, because you can never have too much sushi right? Yama sushi is another local favourite, particularly for its fresh and delicious dishes. Its simple decor is what you’d expect for a sushi restaurant of its size, and it has the right charm that makes it a great place to sit down and enjoy your food. Everyone who goes to Yama sushi has their own favourite roll, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the Chef’s Special. There’s also other Japanese staples like udon, yakisoba, and donburi if you have a hankering for noodles and rice. As one of the best rated sushi restaurants in North Vancouver, you’ll have to make a stop here on your culinary tour of the area.
